Colicky-Baby Wisdom

Yesterday, a fifty-something man, upon hearing that our baby was colicky and needed to be held and soothed constantly, said it was our fault. According to this all-knowing person, we are spoiling the baby, and the baby is training us, rather than the other way around. I have an aunt who, although she doesn't directly say so, believes this same thing.

In response, I can only say to all these know-it-alls, that if the baby stops crying and falls asleep while a very loud vacuum or blow dryer is on, then the problem is colic, or an immature nervous system. If the loud noise makes baby cry louder and get more upset, then it's not colic. And if you've never had a colicky baby, you'd best keep quiet. A colicky baby cannot self soothe, and no amount of "crying it out" will help.

Every time I've dealt with a colicky baby, I've wanted to shout this off the roof top. The Internet will have to suffice; we don't own a ladder.

Yeah, there are people out there who think that, and you are right. They have never had a colicky baby.

Amen. I'm in the same boat as you...my baby is 6 weeks old, and I've wanted to smack (but thankfully never have) the insensitive people who think they have the "answer" that I must be stupidly missing. If it isn't empathy, I don't want it. Good luck.
