Adderall

Well, Liz, so far I'm not very impressed with the ADHD drug, Adderall. The doctor claimed that if Daniel metabolizes medicine quickly, he may need a higher dose than another child his size. We're just not seeing much change on 10 mg. Shouldn't any change be significant? The children don't know that Don lost his job; we only told them that his hours had changed. They seem completely oblivious to the situation, so I don't think any stress we might exhibit is affecting Daniel's symptoms - at least at this time.

The literature that came with the Adderall mentions speaking to your doctor if you take in fruit juice or vitamin C, as it could raise the acidity of the stomach and affect the medication. I don't know if that merely means Daniel might get a stomachache from the drug/acidic combination, or instead, that the medicine's absorption is affected. The doctor never mentioned watching Daniel's diet for anything. He does drink about 6 ounces of real juice daily, plus some Country Time Lemonade, which is fortified with Vitamin C. I looked far and wide for a drink that isn't fortified with Vitamin C, to no avail.

Do you remember any restrictions on Grace's diet with the Adderall? I'll put a call into the doctor or research this online if you don't remember anything about Vitamin C warnings. Thank you!

Hi Pam... although we did Adderall XR for quite a while, as we moved on to other meds I found myself not at all impressed with it either. The Vyvanse made a much bigger difference, but still had emotional side affects. The absolute best med for my child as been the Strattera. She is able to focus, she has more self control, but she's still herself. She still has lots of energy, but I never had a problem with that in the first place.

I don't remember anything about the possible vitamin C interaction. We've always given meds in a spoonful of unsweetened applesauce. I would doubt this is a big factor. Trust your gut on this one. Ask for a different med if you don't think this one is working.

I have some catching up to do with your blog. How cool to take a peek this morning and see you talking to me! :-)
