Emily Rose is tucked in bed. We've just finished our third full-day alone together. Our activities today: reading, naming stuffed animals, making farm-animal sounds, playing peek-a-boo, taking lids off tupperware and putting them back on, taking cups out of drawers and putting them back in, doing chores and cuddling. She likes books now, as noted in a previous post, and has recently increased her sitting-still tolerance by an average of two more pages per book. LOL
Bill Martin Jr.'s Brown Bear, Brown Bear is her favorite book, with Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear coming in a close second, because of the motions (turn around, touch the ground, etc.). I have to remember to make the animal sounds when I read Brown Bear, or she gets off my lap. That girl loves her animal sounds. She still smiles in that cute, open-mouthed babyish way, involving the whole face. Oh, how she beams at the moos, oinks, glub glubs, quack quacks, neighs, baas, meows, and ruff ruffs. What is it about animal sounds that delights and intrigues her more than words with real meaning? Sounds are funnier? I look funny when I do it? Ha - that must be it!
Anyway, maybe I should write a children's book that incorporates funny sounds. Sure has worked well for many authors. The Froggy books come to mind, for one. I think Jonathan London is the author. Repeating phrases are just as appealing as funny sounds. In fact, I would love to read her the classics, like The Little Red Hen, The Gingerbread Man, The Three Little Pigs, and others with repeating parts. However, she is too young to sit for the wordy parts. I should write simpler versions of these fun classics, to appeal to active toddlers. I know she would love to hear me use a funny voice to say, "Not by the hair of my chinny, chin, chin!" Oh! My mind's eye can so clearly see her whole-face smile, with the wide-open mouth and sparkling eyes. Makes me almost want to go wake her so I can read her my own condensed version. Almost.
Oh, my! I just learned how to do a hyper-link! I did it, up above. All this is embarrassingly easy, I'm finding. It's just taking the time to experiment. I'm on my way! lol

Hey! Thanks for the comment. My Maddie sounds like your daughter, she's almost two and still calls animals by their sounds instead of their names. If you end up writing that book, let me know! :) Nice blog, I will be back to visit! I'm a mommy blog addict. :)
Have you tried telling her without a book? Beeper loves to listen to me tell him my version of the Three Little Pigs and other stories. His favorite part is, "Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin."
My son loved Brown Bear, Brown Bear too! I would absolutely buy a book you write with lots of animal sounds and repeated phrases (plot optional.)
