Surprising School Decision

I'm not a big Halloween fan, mostly because Satanic groups are more active on that day than on any other day of the year. Why give them their own day to celebrate Satan? Also, my kids get scared at all the dark costumes they see in the stores (usually displayed for a good six weeks). We don't want them dwelling on such things, so we don't do anything for Halloween unless a our church offers a Harvest alternative. This year nothing was offered.

That said, the article below is disturbing. If it were a violent character costume, that would be a legitimate reason to send a child home. I've been a public school teacher and I know that the excitement about Halloween, especially if it involves a dress-up day and parties, means that not much learning occurs on this day anyway. Asserting that students were distracted by this particular costume is just plain weak. They are distracted and high as kites anyway on this day.

(Nov. 1) - School officials in Paramus, N.J., weren't impressed when a student chose to pose as the Chosen One on Halloween.
Alex Woinski, 13, told WCBS-TV he was inspired to dress up as Jesus Christ because his friends say his shoulder-length brown hair makes him resemble the prophet. The teen completed the getup with sandals, a robe, a fake beard, a sash and thorns.

The principal of West Brook Middle School said Alex Woinski's costume was a distraction to other students.

The principal of West Brook Middle School said that the boy was sent home because the costume was disruptive to other students. "Children were [asking], where is the boy who is Jesus Christ?" principal Joan Broe told WCBS-TV. "It was disrupting the education process."
Alex said school officials told him the costume was "offensive to some students."
Alex, whose mother is Catholic and father is Jewish, has developed an interest in religion, according to WCBS-TV. He recently celebrated his Bar Mitzvah.
"I think the whole freedom of speech and expression has definitely had a damper put on it, and this is proof of that," said Kim Woinski, Alex's mother.
Alex went trick-or-treating as Jesus on Friday night.

I don't care much for Halloween either. Mostly because I don't like trick-or-treating. Dressing up is fun, though. I don't see the big deal about the costume. I had a friend who was Moses one year. They obviously just need to chill out.
